MABC Hike: The Stawamus Chief!

Join us for a unique and fun experience enjoying the beauty of British Columbia right in our own backyard!

Sunday, July 18th, 2010 9 a.m.
Members are meeting to Hike the Stawamus Chief. The Stawamus chief is located near the town of Squamish 30 minutes north of Horeshoe Bay on Highway 99 on the way to Whistler.

Our group will meet at the Shannon Falls Provincial Park parking lot at 9am on Sunday July 18th, 2010. If there is sufficient parking, we will all park at this lot. Cost is $3/vehicle/day. If the lot is full, there is another parking lot located approx. 1 km further north on Highway 99.

What to bring:

Make sure to bring a picnic lunch to eat when we reach the top. Also, bring plenty of water, maybe 2 or 3 bottles. Bring snacks, power bars, dried fruit and nuts for the way up. If it is sunny, you may want to bring sunscreen and a hat. Also bring some insect repellant as well. Bring a backpack to carry all your items.
Make sure you have plenty of sleep the night before and that you are physcially up to this challenge. The trail can be very steep in some sections with a few flat areas. Wear proper hiking shoes or boots but good runners are okay. Just make sure they are comfortable.

The long range forecast is calling for sunny skies with some cloud cover and temperatures in the high teens and low twenties. This is ideal weather for hiking but you may want to also bring a change of clothes and/or some warm clothing just in case it is breezy and cool up top.

FOR ANY OF YOU WHO DO NOT WISH TO DO THE HIKE YOU CAN REMAIN IN THE MAIN AREA AND ENJOY EXPLORING THE IMMEDIATE AREA AND ENJOY A PICNIC AT THE PICNIC SITE AND WAIT UNTIL WE ALL RETURN.

Please RSVP with your cell phone # and number of persons in your party so we can co-ordinate everything to make sure we do not leave anyone behind.

Don't miss this great opportunity to do some unique exploring and experience the absolute beauty of "Beautiful British Columbia". Our Hike and Team Leaders will be Manley Mah and Peter Young and any of you who have participated with Manley/Peter in any of our past MABC activities will know that you are in for a treat and a good time!

Kayaking at Deep Cove

Last Saturday, we journeyed to Deep Cove for some kayaking. The weather was amazing (scalding hot) during the time we went that some of us ended up with a lifejacket/shorts tan! Proof we were out on the water, kayaking away.

Briefing before we headed out. He taught the person sitting behind how to use the paddles to navigate the kayak, and what to do - ex. keep your lifejackets on at all times, use your whistle if you need help.

Some pictures out on the water: (Jeff & I braved taking out our camera to capture the good times)

We kayaked all the way to "Seagull Island" - could have been the setting for LOST.

Thank you to Eudora Koh for planning the event! Only downside was that the water was way too dirty to take a swim in!

See you at skydiving! :)

CLOTHES:
Please wear comfortable clothing and running shoes, as we will be giving you a jumpsuit, helmet and goggles.

MORE DETAILS:
To make a Tandem Skydive you must be under 220lb and over 18 years of age. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must have written proof of parental consent. If you are 15 or under a parent/guardian must be present for the jump.

SOLO AND HAND-CAM VIDEO PRICES:
Videos are available for purchase on the day of your jump.

RATES:
$135.00 (Solo Video),
$115.00 (Hand-Cam.),
$135 (Stills 30 pics), $230 (Video + Stills)

Video can be arranged and paid for when you are checking in. Both videos are edited to music and are approx. 10 minutes in length including a pre-jump ground interview, footage inside the plane, your skydive and landing.

For the solo video we send up one of our experienced skydivers (who specialize in filming tandems) with a camera on their helmet, they will exit the plane the same time as you and will film your free fall from a 3rd party perspective. They will land before you and film you coming back down to the ground. The Hand cam is similar except video is taken by a camera attached to your instructors wrist, during free fall it will be more of an up close personal shot. The camera will keep rolling once your under the canopy and you will get your comments and perspective coming back down. They are an awesome investment especially to prove to your friends and family how crazy you really are!

BRIEFING:
After you fill in the consent form, there will be a 15-20 minute training session.

There will be approximately a 20 minute plane ride, a 30-60 second free fall and 5-6 minute canopy ride from the time the parachute opens until you land. You will receive a certificate and a log sheet as proof you made your first tandem skydive. Allow yourself 2-3 hours at our jump center in Abbotsford to complete your skydive.

TRANSPORTATION:
If you are not driving, the best way to get there is by Greyhound. If you are coming from Vancouver the bus runs from Pacific Central station, which is close to Main street sky train station. The bus will take you to Abbotsford for about $30 (round trip). Once at the bus station cabs are available to take you to the drop zone for about $10-$15. We are located at 5112 Gladwin Rd. Abbotsford BC.

We do run a shuttle from our Vancouver shop on Alberni Street to the drop zone on Saturday and Sunday mornings leaving at 9am and returning right after you have made your jump. The cost is $25 round-trip per person pre-paid and we require a minimum of 4 people. Please call the shop to make reservations at 604-327-5867 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 604-327-5867 end_of_the_skype_highlighting.
