MABC's Chinese New Year Dinner 2010

The Year of the Tiger marked a special year with Chinese New Year & Valentines Day falling on the same day. 10 of us decided to attend the Malaysian Association of British Columbia's (MABC) annual Chinese New Year dinner and partake in the festivities that CNY eve!

The dinner was at Floata Seafood restaurant which was situated at Chinatown. Renowned for it's scumptious food, it's reputation did not disappoint as we were to experience it first-hand ourselves!

A lion dance started the show off.

Along with a speech from Datuk Dr Mani Jegathesan, who is also fondly known as the Flying Doctor for competing in the 200m dash in 3 Olympic games: Rome (1960), Tokyo (1964) and Mexico (1968).

Our table was lucky number 11.

And our menu of the night was amazing!

Feast your eyes :)

Shan & Bonn enjoying the food.

Delightful Mango pudding to end the night!

We bought raffles in the hopes of winning.

Unfortunately, that did not happen. Better luck next time!

Our lovely attendees:

Bonn took the honor of being the only male present from SFU that evening but enjoyed it immensely.

After dinner festivities was dancing until 1am to ring in the new Chinese New Year.

This year was special because not only was it one of our first times attending MABC's CNY dinner, but we also had the privilege to perform a simple fan dance for them. Costumes and props provided by Tourism Malaysia. Music courtesy of my dear friend, Nancy Yeh.

Resembles Chinese waitresses dancing? :P

Melanie

Makan at Seri Malaysia

On Wednesday, the 10th of Februrary, 10 Malaysian students from SFU were so kindly invited to a sponsored dinner at Seri Malaysia. The dinner was hosted by the Honorable Minister of Youth and Sports of Malaysia, Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Here are some of the pictures that highlight this opportunity:

A great buffet-style Malaysian dinner!

A big thank you to Tourism Malaysia and the Consulate General of Malaysia!

Malaysia-Singapore Night 2010

The annual Malaysia Singapore Night took place once again at UBC. With a whole new layout from last year, it was a different sight to behold.

Even though MSSC didn't take part in it this year, as we did last year with our Candyman dance...

We came laden with our troops to support this festive cultural night!
Here's some of our friendly faces!

Claudia (the President of UBC's Seri Malaysia Club), Mel Chua & Justin Ang.

Shan with the P & VP of MSSC. ;)

The night started off with a lion dance to uphold tradition and bring fortune.

Then came an exciting gu-chen performance by Livia Gho, Vice President of the Singapore Raffles Club.

After her was a performance by Syahidah, President of the Singapore Raffles Club.

Some other smiling faces :)

Soon after was a choir performance.

And here's a snippet from the choir performance:

In between performances, there were also some raffles draws. Our very own MSSC member Shan Wu got lucky with prizes sponsored by Tourism Malaysia, MABC and VSC.

The very last performance was a Malay band that took our breath away.

They even drew the crowd in for a dance-off. Of course by then, we could smell the food.

Buffet-style, it was traditional Malaysian and Singaporean food that put even MORE smiles on our very hungry faces.

Note the picture below.

Picture taking sessions occured afterwards as well as some networking.

Special thanks to Gina, the President of the Malaysian Association of BC for providing me with some of the photos above.

Here's to the next time,
Melanie
